Achieving correct time delay in an analytical system is necessary in making life of process plant operators more easy and reliable. When a process flow readout has an off spec, knowing when this happened is critical for plant operation.

Most process people assume that all measurements are instantaneous, this can be very confusing when looking into analyser results. Delay is inevitable even with in situ sensors. There is not much point in getting an accurate result when this result comes too late.

A timely response needs to be ensured, it does however need to meet the purpose of the measurement itself.

Generally reaction processes are fast and might need the analyses in 10 seconds or less, distillation processes are slow and 10 minutes of delay might be acceptable.

State of the Art in Wastewater Treatment Plant Management

Strathkelvin Instruments Ltd have developed the Activated Sludge Plant Controller to give the State of the Art in Wastewater Treatment Plant Management. The modular system is self-cleaning and self-calibrating and measures over 20 different parameters allowing fully automatic control of the treatment process whilst minimising treatment cost and Carbon Consumption.
One particular parameter, which is of key interest to many managers, is the Toxic Affect the Influent may have on the Treatment Plant Bacteria. The ASP-Con can automatically measure this Toxicity or Inhibition level every 15 minutes and this paper will detail the Technology behind the measurement, show how it is performed and present real life case studies.
The best case study so far has been the Cookstown Case study where 50% of Total Site Energy was saved, i.e. 1.004 GWh; € 132.490,- and 502 Tes Carbon per annum
